DEADWOOD RANKS AS SEVENTH MOST HISTORIC SMALL TOWN IN AMERICA
Deadwood ranks as the seventh most historic small town in America, according to ePodunk, Inc., a national company providing information about the historic character of small places. Rapid City and Yankton also landed on the list of 138 "out-of-the-way treasures."
The ePodunk Historic Small Towns Index uses four statistical measures to rank the historic character of small places in the United States. The Index is based on the number of buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places in a county, the size of National Register Historic Districts in a county, the age of a county’s housing, and the number of county projects awarded a federal preservation tax credit.
The result is 138 out-of-the-way destinations for those interested in historic travel. Deadwood’s competition included places like Shirley, Mass.; Bristol, Conn.; and Natchez, Miss.
Other South Dakota communities also ranking high nationally are Aberdeen, Belle Fourche, Brookings, Custer, Hot Springs, Huron, Jefferson, Lead, Mitchell, Pierre, Scotland, Spearfish and Vermillion.
