KILTS, PIPES AND GAMES AT SCOTLAND’S HIGHLAND FESTIVAL

The annual South Dakota Highland Festival will take place Saturday, Sept. 15, in Scotland, S.D. Featuring traditional bagpipe bands and athletic competitions, the event celebrates the town’s Scottish heritage.

A solo piping competition and Braemar stone athletic event kick off the day’s festivities at 9 a.m. Athletes also will test their skills in hammer-throw, caber-toss and sheaf-toss competitions. At noon, there will be Scottish highland dancing, and pipe bands will perform throughout the day. Other highlights include living-history demonstrations by Clann Tartan, border collie sheep-herding, and a rugby match between the University of South Dakota and South Dakota State University.

The day closes with a Scottish buffet at 6 p.m., and at 7:30 p.m., visitors can attend a Ceilidh featuring the Kenora Scottish Pipes and Drums and traditional Scottish dancing.

Admission is $5 per person or $10 per family. All events will be held at the Scotland Sports Complex. For more information, call (605) 583-2747 or visit www.angelfire.com/yt/scotsfest.

The South Dakota Highland Festival has been designated a "Great Event" by the South Dakota Department of Tourism. With that designation, the department provides assistance to event coordinators as well as creates and funds promotions for the event. The objective of the Department of Tourism’s "Great Events" program is to boost attendance at events and to increase economic impact in host communities.
