South Dakota Film Festival Announces 2009 Schedule:
Kevin Costner to Make Multiple Appearances

Aberdeen, SD – Today, the South Dakota Film Festival announces the 2009 schedule of events for the third annual festival. Highlighting this year's festival are multiple appearances by Academy Award winner Kevin Costner.

The festival kicks off on Friday, Sept. 18 and runs through Sunday, Sept. 20 in Aberdeen. The festival features more than 30 films from around the country, a film-set demonstration, two afterglow parties and Discussions in the Round. Participants are also encouraged to visit the Native American Cultural Center and Museum, which is the home of the Northern Route to the Black Hills Tourism Association.

Mr. Costner’s appearance is made possible by the Northern Route to the Black Hills Tourism Association.

“To commemorate the 20th anniversary of Dances With Wolves, we invited Costner to share his perspective on the film-making experience and discuss his interest in South Dakota and the Native American Culture,” said Lanni Zephier Smith, Executive Director of the Northern Route to the Black Hills Tourism Association.

“He’s played a very important role in advancing the film industry in South Dakota. We’re very privileged to have the opportunity to have him here and learn from his experiences,” said Troy McQuillen, Festival Co-Producer.

Mr. Costner will speak at the Opening Session, attend various parties and fundraisers. He will also participate in a filmmaker and student Discussion in the Round Saturday morning before moving on to an autograph session at the Native American Cultural Center and Museum.

Seating will be limited. Advanced ticket purchasing is recommended. Tickets may be purchased online at www.southdakotafilmfest.org, by phone at 605-725-2697, or at the Capitol Theatre office at 417 S. Main Street, Aberdeen.

The South Dakota Film Festival began in 2007 as an effort to bring attention to the filmic arts throughout the state. The festival is organized by volunteers in conjunction with the Aberdeen Community Theatre. Festival sponsors include: Northern Route to the Black Hills Tourism Association, South Dakota Film Office, Aberdeen Hotel Alliance, and many other local businesses.

The Northern Route to the Black Hills Tourism Association was created to promote a less-traveled pathway to the Black Hills. Using Aberdeen, SD as a central hub, many different routes are mapped by the association taking visitors through quaint, rural America. Along the way are Native American sites, museums, trails, rivers, restaurants, attractions and landmarks.
