Marks of History: Harvey Dunn
PIERRE, S.D. – Harvey Dunn was a famous American painter of western life, war scenes and portraits. The South Dakota native first studied art at State College in Brookings, S.D., before studying at the Art Institute in Chicago.
Dunn was selected as an official American Expeditionary Force artist during World War I. During this time, he painted many war scenes depicting the conflict in Europe. Dunn preferred to paint early South Dakota life, saying, “My search for other horizons led me around to my first.” In 1950, he gave South Dakota a collection of his best works; the paintings are displayed at South Dakota State University.
There is a historical marker in tribute to Dunn, near his homestead, at the intersection of a county road and U.S. Highway 14 at Manchester, S.D.
