Companies, Communities Represent State at Firearms Trade Show

PIERRE, S.D. - South Dakota is sending one of its largest contingents to the premier trade show of the firearms industry on Jan. 18-21 in Las Vegas, Nev.

Sixteen communities will partner with the South Dakota Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED) through its Trade Show Co-op Marketing program, and 18 other South Dakota companies or development groups are attending the show independently.

“South Dakota will be well represented,” said Mark Vaux, Business Development Representative with GOED. “When you consider that there are 38 firearms companies in South Dakota, and 17 of them are attending this show, that tells us we are concentrating our efforts in the right areas.”

The 2011 show will be the third SHOT Show that Jim Barringer, Executive Vice President of the Aberdeen Development Corporation, has attended with GOED.

“I thought the SHOT Show was the most heavily attended trade show I have ever been to. The attendees are of the greatest variety – from large companies like Colt to Smith & Wesson, to smaller companies that may only have a few employees,” Barringer said. “South Dakota, being a hunting state with a great business climate, is well-placed at this show.”

In 2010, there were nearly 60,000 attendees and more than 1,600 exhibitors at the SHOT Show. GOED attended cooperatively with 16 South Dakota communities, which was a record for the program.

Communities attending in conjunction with GOED include: Aberdeen, Chamberlain, De Smet, Glacial Lakes (Britton), Highmore, Huron, Lincoln and Minnehaha counties, Madison, Miller, Mitchell, Mobridge, Rapid City, Vermillion, Spearfish, Webster, and Winner.
