South Dakota’s Great Places: Casey Tibbs Rodeo Center

PIERRE, S.D. – One of South Dakota’s Great Places, the Casey Tibbs Rodeo Center, honors the official state sport of South Dakota, rodeo.

The Casey Tibbs Rodeo Center is located in Fort Pierre near the Verendrye Monument. It is the newest museum in South Dakota dedicated to rodeo history, rodeo competitors and the official sport of rodeo.

The center honors both Casey Tibbs, a nine-time world champion, and Mattie Goff Newbombe, a trick rider. Visitors will enjoy riding an animated bull, interactive displays, videos, artifacts, and learn how rodeo is a rich component to South Dakota’s history.

South Dakota’s professional rodeo competitors are honored in the Hall of Champions inside the Casey Tibbs Rodeo Center. This gallery is devoted to recognizing all of South Dakota’s world champions since 1929.

The
Rodeo Center is also home to the Mattie Goff Newcombe Conference Center, which has facilities suitable for special events, receptions, and meetings with a view of the Missouri River.

The center is open Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and Sunday, 1-4 p.m., CDT. Admission is $5.00 for adults, $4.00 for seniors, $3.00 for children and teens ages 6-18, and children under five are free.
