Gov. Rounds to recognize Dakota Corps and Richard Hagen-Minerva Harvey Scholarship recipients
PIERRE, S.D. - Gov. Mike Rounds has announced the 2008 Dakota Corps Scholarship and the Richard Hagen-Minerva Harvey Scholarship recipients will be recognized at a reception and awards ceremony on Tuesday, July 22, beginning at 5 p.m. (CDT) on the patio of the Governor's Residence in Pierre. The governor will also recognize businesses and organizations who have contributed to the Dakota Corps Scholarship fund and the Richard Hagen-Minerva Harvey Scholarship fund.
“I am pleased to congratulate and give recognition to the recipients of the Dakota Corps Scholarship and the Richard Hagen-Minerva Harvey Scholarship,” said Gov. Rounds. “We are fortunate that these outstanding young people, who are Dakota Corps Scholarship recipients, have chosen to remain in South Dakota and commit to working in a critical need occupation for a period of five years.”
The Dakota Corps Scholarship pays the full tuition and generally-applicable fees for selected qualified applicants. The program was created to encourage students to:
- Obtain their postsecondary education in South Dakota at a public or participating private university;
- Remain in the state upon completion of their education; and
- Contribute to the state of South Dakota and its citizens by working in a critical need occupation for five years.
The current critical need occupations include: teaching K-12 music, special education, foreign language, mathematics or science and working as a licensed practical nurse, registered nurse or in other allied health care fields, including pharmacy.
Sixty incoming college freshmen from across the state have been awarded the Dakota Corps Scholarship for the 2008-2009 school year.
