Electoral College votes cast

PIERRE, S.D. – Gov. Mike Rounds, Lt. Gov. Dennis Daugaard, and Attorney General Larry Long cast South Dakota’s votes Monday as members of the Electoral College.

The ceremony was held in the governor’s reception room in the Capitol.

Each officer signed Certificate of Vote documents that officially proclaimed the majority of South Dakotan’s presidential choice in the Nov. 4 general election.

South Dakotans cast 203,054 votes for the Republican presidential slate of U.S. Sen. John McCain and vice presidential running mate Gov. Sarah Palin.  Democratic candidates, U.S. Sen. Barack Obama and running mate U.S. Sen. Joe Biden, who won the national election, received 170,924 votes in South Dakota.

Secretary of State Chris Nelson said the certificates would be forwarded to Washington, D.C., to the Office of the Vice President, the Archivist of the United States, and the Chief U.S. District Court Judge in South Dakota.  Nelson also kept a copy for his office.
