Gov. Rounds announces POW/MIA Flag ceremony
PIERRE, S.D. – Gov. Mike Rounds will host a ceremony on Thursday, May 22, 2008, at 2:30 p.m. at the South Dakota Information Center on I-90 near Valley Springs. The event will kick-off South Dakota’s new policy of flying POW/MIA flags year-round at State Owned Interstate and State Highway Rest Areas, Game, Fish and Parks Visitor Centers, and the State Capitol grounds in Pierre.
“We should take every opportunity to honor the brave men and women who have worn the uniform of the United States of America,” said Gov. Rounds. “It’s my hope that when travelers drive across the state, they’ll notice the POW/MIA flags and remember the sacrifices made by those who have fought for our freedom; especially on this Memorial Day weekend.”
Thursday’s event will feature former POWs and comments from General Doohen and Gov. Rounds, followed by a ceremonial first-raising of the POW/MIA flag. A flyover by South Dakota Air Guard F-16s will be part of the program.
*Media note: The South Dakota Information Center is located off the west bound lane of I-90 at the Valley Springs exit at mile marker 410. If traveling east on I-90, it is necessary to take the first exit across the border in Minnesota and double back to the west.
