Sunday, June 1, Rapid City, 3 p.m. (MDT) - Approximately 225 high school students, the majority of them Native American students, will begin five weeks of intensive academic study in preparation for college as part of South Dakota’s GEAR UP program. The summer GEAR UP program will run June 1-July 8, with an opening ceremony June 1, 3 p.m., on the School of Mines and Technology campus (Electrical Engineering and Physics Building) in Rapid City. A federally funded program, GEAR UP targets students from low socio-economic and minority backgrounds who have not traditionally excelled at graduating from high school. GEAR UP aims to help them make a successful transition to higher education. Friday, June 6, Sturgis, 9 a.m. (MDT)- Golden Coyote Sling Load Certification Exercise - The South Dakota National Guard will conduct a sling load certification exercise at the Sturgis Airport where service members are certified on the safe and proper rigging of loads for helicopter airlift.
