Five South Dakota students chosen for Washington internship opportunity

PIERRE, S.D. – Five students from South Dakota will pursue internships this summer in the nation’s capital under a pilot program announced earlier this year by Gov. Mike Rounds.

The program, offered through the Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars, provides financial support for students to pursue internships based on their academic work and interests.

“This offers students some highly challenging opportunities to work and learn in Washington D.C. for academic credit,” said Gov. Rounds. “Internships such as these are highly valued by students, because they are critical stepping stones to further learning and professional success.”

South Dakota students chosen for the Washington internship program are:
  • Delia Druley of Doland, a political science major from The University of South Dakota, who will work at the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) in the Worker’s Health Program. PAHO is an international public health agency with 100 years of experience in working to improve health and living standards of the countries of the Americas.
  • Jacob Mortenson of Fort Pierre, a political science and economics major at USD, will work as a public policy intern for the Social Security Advisory Board (SSAB). The SSAB is an independent, bipartisan board created by Congress to advise the President, Congress, and Social Security commissioner on matters related to Social Security and Supplemental Security Income programs.
  • Jane Tschetter of Brookings, pursuing a business economics degree from South Dakota State University, will intern with the Office of Government Affairs at the Corporation for National and Community Services (CNCS). CNCS is a federal independent agency that connects Americans of all ages and backgrounds with opportunities to give back to their communities and nation.
  • Jonathan Walz of Huron, a political science and economics major at USD, will intern at The Globalist, a company that provides international news content to firms and individuals. The Globalist also publishes a daily online magazine that focuses on international affairs. Walz will research specific international issues and summarize his findings for publication.
  • Jennifer Wollman of Bridgewater, a contemporary media and journalism major at USD, will work at the LawMedia Group. Wollman’s internship will involve drafting letters to the editor, opinion pieces, and memos; conducting research; performing administrative tasks; and assisting staff in managing public policy campaigns and issues for various clients.

Each student will receive a $5,250 award. The students are responsible for all tuition and fees paid for credit earned during the internship, for living costs not covered by the award, and for travel to and from Washington.

Students were nominated by their institution, which agreed to award academic credit for the internship experience. The students chosen also agreed to return to South Dakota for at least one semester of full-time enrollment or one year of employment after the internship ends.
