Governor’s Daycare Facility Awarded in Hudson

PIERRE, S.D. – Gov. Mike Rounds announced today that the community of Hudson has been granted a 1,200 square foot Governor’s Daycare Facility.

“The Hudson Daycare joined together with parents, local businesses and community leaders to show the need for additional, reliable and quality daycare for area children of all ages,” said Gov. Rounds. “Quality daycare services and facilities are important to the economic viability of the community.”

After many community meetings and performing a community wide assessment of the daycare needs for Hudson, the Hudson Economic Development, Inc. (HEDI) took the necessary steps to apply for a Governor’s Daycare Facility grant.

“People are attracted to our community because of its hometown feel, low cost housing, and close proximity to Sioux Falls,” said Tom Miller, President of the Hudson Economic Development, Inc. “We do have some very good family daycare providers in town but one thing Hudson is in need of is additional day care opportunities for our families. Expansion of these opportunities is necessary for our small town to be attractive.”

The new daycare will be located on donated land from the city, near the old school in Hudson. HEDI plans to cover the costs of utilities, along with donated labor in the construction process, to keep the cost of the project minimal.

“We have received a lot of support for this project in our community and know that a daycare facility such as this will make Hudson an even more attractive place for young families to live and work,” concluded Miller.

Initiated in 1997, the Governor’s Daycare Facility offers a reasonably sized, affordable building design to accommodate up to 20 children. The standard design, in conjunction with the Governor’s Inmate Training Program, keeps the cost of these facilities affordable.

The facilities may be purchased and placed in most communities in South Dakota. Non-profit organizations may be eligible to apply for a facility under the Governor’s Daycare Facility Grant Program. All Governor’s Daycare Facilities, whether granted or purchased, must receive proper licensing from the Department of Social Services Office of Child Care Services.
