Friday, September 21, Rapid City, 3 p.m. (MDT) - Promotion Ceremony - The South Dakota National Guard will promote William Waeckerle to the rank of chief warrant officer five at Building 400 on Camp Rapid. The public is encouraged to attend. The rank of chief warrant officer five is the highest rank obtainable in the U.S. Army Warrant Officer Corps. For more information, please contact Maj. Friday-Sunday, September 21-23, Aberdeen – The inaugural South Dakota Film Festival will be held at the Capitol Theatre.  The festival will include 36 film submissions, from feature-length to short films. An exclusive screening of Into the Wild, the Sean Penn movie that spent time filming in South Dakota in June, 2006, will take place on Friday, Sept. 21. All submissions were either directed/produced by South Dakotans or were filmed in South Dakota.  Contact Wanda Goodman at (605) 773-3301 or Wanda.Goodman@state.sd.us for more information.
 
Friday-Saturday, September 21-22, Ft. Pierre, 7 p.m. (CDT) – The Family Support Council will meet at the Holiday Inn Express in Ft. Pierre from 7 to 9 p.m. and will resume on Saturday, September 22 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The public is welcome. Saturday, September 22, Mickelson Trail in the Northern Black Hills, 8 a.m. (MDT) - Veterans Honor March - The South Dakota National Guard's Enlisted Association will be holding its 4th Annual Black Hills Veterans Honor March to pay tribute to the many sacrifices this nation's veterans have made in the past and continue to make today. The opening ceremony will take place at 7:45 a.m. on the Mickelson Trail near Rochford followed by the start at 8 a.m. Participants will travel the 26.2 miles along the trail to the finish at the Deadwood Fairgrounds. The first half of the march will be uphill to Dumont, then, downhill to the finish line. The public is encouraged to participate. Sunday, September 23, Brookings, 2 p.m. (CDT) - POW/MIA Recognition Day Ceremony - Brig. Gen. Keith Corbett, the assistant adjutant general for the South Dakota Army National Guard, will speak at the Brookings VFW POW/MIA Recognition Day Ceremony to bring recognition and honor to those who have served and sacrificed so much for our country. Monday-Tuesday, September 24-25, Mitchell, 8 a.m. (CDT) - The SD Board of Education will meet at Mitchell Technical Institute (TechnologyCenter, Room 111).  Agenda items include approval of Teacher Compensation Assistance Program applications and proposed rule changes related to delivery of courses via the South Dakota Virtual High School.  The second day of the meeting will focus on topics related to the state's four technical institutes.  A complete agenda is available online at http://doe.sd.gov/secretary/board/schedule.asp. Monday, September 24, Watertown, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. (CDT) - The SD Department of Labor and Northeast Area Career Center will be sponsoring the sixth annual Career Expo for high school students at the Civic Arena.  This year’s event will be held in conjunction with Post-high Planning Day for juniors and seniors.  Students from all over northeastern South Dakota will attend to visit with local businesses about occupations in demand and the training needed to produce their product or perform their service.  Students will then visit with post-secondary schools that offer training in those areas.  Other sponsors include the Watertown School District, SD Tech Prep, BISCO (Business/Industry/School Coalition), Lake Area Technical Institute, and Lake Area Multi-District.  For more information, call Sue Bogen, (605) 882-5131.

Students will try their hand at navigating construction equipment through an obstacle course and tour several construction projects in the area. The event is sponsored by the S.D.
