Gov. Rounds to award Dakota Corps Scholarships

PIERRES.D. – Gov. Mike Rounds has announced that he will host the 2005 Dakota Corps Scholarship recipients at a reception and awards ceremony on Tuesday, August 2, beginning at 5 p.m. (CDT) at the Governor’s Residence in Pierre.  Also, the governor will recognize businesses and organizations who have contributed to the Dakota Corps Scholarship fund.

“This is our way to congratulate and honor these outstanding recipients of the Dakota Corps Scholarships,” said Gov. Rounds.  “We are pleased that these students have chosen to remain in South Dakota and to fill a need in a critical field of study.”

The current critical need occupations include: teaching K-12 music, special education, or foreign language; teaching high school math or science; and working as a licensed practical nurse, registered nurse or in other allied health care fields, including pharmacy.

Twenty eight incoming college freshmen from across the state will be awarded the Dakota Corps Scholarship for the 2005-2006 school year.  These students have committed to attend an in-state university and to join critical need occupations in South Dakota.  In addition, six Dakota Corps Scholarships will be awarded to students already enrolled in postsecondary education.
