12 Radio Stations To Offer Special Vietnam Memorial Program

PIERRE, S.D. – Twelve commercial radio stations are working together to bring a special program to listeners across the state to raise funds for the upcoming dedication of the South Dakota Vietnam War Memorial.

The twelve stations will jointly broadcast the 5-hour fundraiser on Thursday, May 25 from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. (CT). The program will feature interviews with Vietnam War era veterans, music and news of the Vietnam War years, and interviews with Gov. Mike Rounds and dedication event organizers.

“These stations are making a big contribution themselves to set aside their normal programming to help recognize the service and dedication of our Vietnam era veterans,” Gov. Mike Rounds said. “It’s a great way to start the Memorial Day weekend in honor of all our veterans.”

The Dakota News Network organized the live program, which will be hosted from the KGFX studios in Pierre.

The twelve participating stations are: KSDN AM, Aberdeen; KPLO FM, Chamberlain; KDSJ AM, Deadwood; KOKK AM, Huron; KMSD AM, Milbank; KOLY AM, Mobridge; KMLO FM, Mobridge; KGFX AM, Pierre; KBWS FM, Sisseton; KBHB AM, Sturgis; KWAT AM, Watertown; and KVTK AM, Yankton.

Midcontinent Communications is donating its call service center to allow people to call in and make their pledge during the program. The toll-free number is 1-888-226-9360. Donations can also be made online at www.SDVietnamWarMemorial.com or mailed to the South Dakota Community Foundation, PO Box 296, Pierre, SD 57501.

The South Dakota Vietnam War Memorial will be dedicated on September 15 & 16 on the Capitol grounds in Pierre. It will feature a 7-foot bronze statue created by South Dakota artists Lee Leuning and Sherri Treeby. Dedication events include a parade, dedication ceremony, replica of the national Vietnam Wall memorial, Huey helicopter rides, a muscle car show, and concerts that include The Beach Boys and The Steve Miller Band.
