3M Announces Investment of $68 Million for Facility Expansion and Modernization in Aberdeen and Brookings
Pierre, SD – 3M Company, with locations in both Aberdeen and Brookings, has announced plans to invest $68 million in 2006 in their manufacturing facilities and equipment upgrades, according to Gov. Mike Rounds. From 2005 through 2006, 3M is expected to invest more than $100 million in the two locations.

“3M has once again chosen to greatly invest, not only in their facilities, but also in South Dakota and our citizens,” said Gov. Rounds. “These capital investments in both the Aberdeen and the Brookings locations will improve 3M’s efficiency and productivity as well as expand the company’s already significant exports from South Dakota. It will allow 3M to meet global demand for new products and provide adequate capacity for existing products.”

"The quality of life, business climate, work ethic and education system in South Dakota make it a very attractive location for 3M's manufacturing operations," said Leigh Otterlei, plant manager, 3M Aberdeen.  "South Dakota is vitally important to 3M's worldwide operations, and so these investments make good business sense for us."

3M plans to invest $34 million in 2006, in its Aberdeen manufacturing facility. This is in addition to the $12 million invested in 2005. The 3M Aberdeen operation is a world leader in the manufacture of respiratory protection products that are used in homes and the work place and currently employs 550 full-time people, 50 more than a year ago.

In 2006, 3M Brookings is scheduled to invest more the $34 million in plant and equipment upgrades. In 2005, Brookings capital spending totaled $21 million. 3M Brookings is the company’s flagship facility for the manufacture of medical products, such as surgical tapes and drapes, dressings, masks and stethoscopes. Employment is up by almost 60 over early 2005, bringing the plant to 800 full-time employees.

“We are proud to be involved in the outstanding success of one of South Dakota’s strongest corporate citizens,” Gov. Rounds concluded.
