Gov. Rounds to recognize Dakota Corps Scholarship recipients

PIERRE, S.D. – Gov. Mike Rounds announced today that he and the South Dakota Board of Regents will host a luncheon to honor the first Dakota Corps Scholarship recipients on Wednesday, July 7, at 11:30 a.m. (CT) at the Ramada Inn and Suites, Sioux Falls.  Additionally, the governor will recognize businesses and organizations who have contributed to the Dakota Corps Scholarship fund.

“I want to congratulate all of these outstanding students for being awarded the first Dakota Corps Scholarships,” said Gov. Mike Rounds. “We know we want to keep these kids right here in South Dakota, and the Dakota Corps Scholarship will allow them financial access to outstanding postsecondary education, while encouraging them to remain here when they’re done,” Rounds said.

Thirty-seven incoming college freshmen from across the state will be awarded the Dakota Corps Scholarship for the 2004-2005 school year. These students have committed to attending an in-state college and to joining critical need occupations in South Dakota. In addition, 36 Dakota Corps Scholarships will be awarded to students already enrolled in postsecondary education.

Gov. Rounds’ Dakota Corps Scholarship Program was designed to encourage students to first obtain their postsecondary education in South Dakota, then to remain in the state upon completion of their education while contributing to its citizens by working in a critical need occupation.

These students will receive full tuition and generally-applicable fees. Current critical need occupations designated by the Department of Labor include: teaching K-12 music, special education, and foreign language in a public, private, or parochial school; teaching high school math or science in a public, private, or parochial school; working as a licensed practical nurse, registered nurse, or in other allied health care fields.
