Current Situation: On Tuesday morning, July 9, 2002 Incident Commander Steve Hasenohrl took command of the Grizzly Gulch Fire. Steve and his Type 3 incident management team will continue overseeing mop up operations and rehabilitation of the fire lines. Today, the Type 1 team is in the process of demobilization and continuing to assist with the transition to the Type 3 team.
The fire was contained on July 7, 2002 at 6:00 p.m., but is not yet controlled. Containment indicates that a safe perimeter has been established around the fire, where control means the fire poses no threat of escaping the perimeter.
Today there will still be smoke and smoldering fuels throughout the fire area. There are still areas next to the fire perimeter that contain a lot of heat, and late in the day there could possibly be some torching and spotting. Concern is still for fire fighter and public safety as the incident management team works toward gaining control of the fire.
All of the road restrictions were lifted as of 6:00 p.m. July 8, 2002. Caution is advised on roads throughout the fire area due to the number of crews and equipment. Initial rehabilitation work has begun which requires heavy equipment to work on dozer lines.
Be FIREWISE: The Lawrence County Fire Advisory Board continues to work with and encourage local residents to “firewise” their residences. Paul Thompson from the Department of Emergency Management is the local contact for information and assistance. He can be contacted at 578-2122.
