A message from First Lady Jean Rounds:
The last week in October is National Red Ribbon Week. It was created to honor DEA agent Enrique Camarena, who was murdered by drug traffickers in 1985.
Red Ribbon Week is a reminder of the harm caused by alcohol, tobacco and drug abuse. Communities, schools, and organizations do an outstanding job in highlighting alcohol, tobacco and drug abuse prevention during Red Ribbon Week.
However, a recent study by the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, shows that substance abuse is up among young people and their perception of harm is down – indicating a strong need for increased and consistent prevention messages.
We need to renew our work with communities, schools, and organizations to expand on the goals and activities of Red Ribbon Week, promoting drug-free messages to youth not just one week a year but seven days a week, 365 days a year!
In observance of Red Ribbon Week, I encourage parents, grandparents, and mentors to talk with their children and keep those communications open. When parents, grandparents, and mentors frequently remind children about the dangers of substance use, a child’s chances of ever using in the first place can be cut in half. Imagine what else can be done when parents, grandparents, mentors, educators and communities come together with positive, consistent, drug-free messages 24/7. It’s an effective combination that can successfully guide youth to live healthy, safe, substance-free lives. Together, we can make a difference!
Sincerely,
First Lady Jean Rounds
