SECRETARY OF STATE JASON GANT AND OST PRESIDENT JOHN YELLOWBIRD STEELE MEET ABOUT ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AT PINE RIDGE INDIAN RESERVATION AND CELEBRATE 3RD ANNIVERSARY OF PASSAGE OF OST UNIFORM COMMERCIAL CODE
On August 2, 2011, South Dakota Secretary of State Jason Gant and Oglala Sioux Tribe President John Yellowbird Steele will meet to discuss and foster economic development at Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, commemorating the third anniversary of the OST’s adoption of the Model Tribal Secured Transactions Act and a comprehensive code of business laws.
The event will include a traditional introduction and pipe ceremony between the two officials and a roundtable discussion concerning how the OST Uniform Commercial Code and business laws have been used during the past three years of development and implementation, the pros and cons of the past three years’ efforts, as well as areas needing improvement.
Secretary of State Jason Gant remarked, “I’m looking forward to the opportunities we can create for South Dakota and Tribal governments to foster business development in the interest of job creation.”
The event will start at 10:00am with the OST Honor Guard, Flag Song and Opening Prayer and will conclude at 1:00pm with a reception. The location of the event is SuAnne Big Crow Boys and Girls Club, Pine Ridge, SD 57770 (Hwy 18 – please allow extra time for road construction work between Oglala and Pine Ridge).
The speakers invited include representatives of US Senator Tim Johnson, US Senator John Thune, and Congresswoman Kristi Noem, as well as of the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, the Great Plains Tribal Chairman’s Association, and the BIA Office of Indian Energy and Economic Development.
