Governor Approves Additional Funding for Highmore Elevator Project
(Pierre)- Highmore will receive $87,550 from the state’s Industrial Park Grant fund to help build a road to a new grain terminal in Highmore, Governor Bill Janklow announced today, June 28. This announcement came on the heels of Janklow awarding the community $330,000 in Community Development Block Grant funds to build a 110-car rail facility as part of the $3.4 million Farmers Union Coop Elevator project.
Currently, the Farmers Union Coop Elevator Co. consists of three elevators located in Kennebec, Reliance and Chamberlain. "The Coop is in the process of building a new rail load-out facility in Highmore. The new facility will ensure long-time shipping viability at a more competitive rate," Janklow said.
Additionally, the increased load-out capacity will allow area producers to access new markets. "This is a win-win situation for both the community of Highmore, as well as producers from across the region," he added.
Janklow said the new half-mile road will come off of US Highway14 and will provide direct access to the elevator. Construction on the road is scheduled to begin this summer.
