Scotland Kuchen Kitchen Expands

PIERRE, S.D. – Fans of German and Czech pastries can now get kuchen and kolaches straight from the oven in Scotland, S.D.  Pietz’s Kuchen Kitchen & Specialties has expanded and celebrated the opening of its new retail space today with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The Kuchen Kitchen has been in business in Scotland since 2008 as a wholesale-only facility.  The business now has retail space, as well as a 900-square-foot production facility.  The retail space, located at 800 4th Street, features 15 flavors of kuchen and eight kolache flavors, as well as other homemade products like German strudels, potato dumplings, caramel and cinnamon rolls, bread and take-and-bake pizzas.

“These are all products we’re making right on site,” said Roger Pietz, owner of Pietz Kuchen Kitchen.  “We’re excited this new facility will allow us to share more of our family recipes with the public.”

The Kuchen Kitchen will also sell other South Dakota-made products like chislic, buffalo meat, and cheese from other area producers.

Lt. Gov. Matt Michels, who attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony, congratulated Roger and Lori Pietz on their business expansion. Michels said small businesses like Pietz’s Kuchen Kitchen & Specialties are the bread and butter of rural communities.

“It’s encouraging to see local entrepreneurs like this take a business idea from their kitchen – to a wholesale operation – and finally to a retail operation,” Michels said. “Main Street businesses breathe life into their communities.”

The Kuchen Kitchen will continue its wholesale operation of providing kuchen and kolaches to nearly 60 retail shops throughout South Dakota and Minnesota

Roger and Lori Pietz opened the Kuchen Kitchen in 2008.  It currently employs four people. For more information, visit www.kuchenkitchen.com
