State Will Honor Former Gov. Bill Janklow on Tuesday
PIERRE, S.D. – Public viewing will be allowed from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. CST on Tuesday, Jan. 17, as former Gov. Bill Janklow lies in state at the South Dakota Capitol.
Those wishing to pay their respects may enter the Capitol via the north doors (parking lot side), where they will be directed to the second-floor Rotunda and then exit from the same north doors.
A memorial ceremony in the Capitol Rotunda is scheduled for 1 p.m. to 1:45 p.m.; access to the second-floor Rotunda will be closed at 11 a.m. to allow time to set up for the memorial ceremony. Access will begin at 12:30 p.m. for that ceremony, again via the north doors.
Rev. David Zellmer, Bishop of the South Dakota Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, will officiate at the memorial ceremony. Gov. Dennis Daugaard will offer a welcome, followed by a Lakota prayer from the Rev. Webster Two Hawk, an Episcopal priest and former Rosebud Sioux tribal chairman.
Offering remembrances will be:
-Larry Gabriel of Cottonwood. State representative, 1983-99. House Majority Leader, 1993-99. South Dakota Secretary of Agriculture, 1999-2007.
-R. Lars Herseth of Houghton. State representative, 1975-87. State senator, 1989-97. House Minority Leader, 1979-87. Senate President Pro Tempore, 1993-95. Senate Minority Leader, 1995-97. 1986 Democratic nominee for Governor. Son of Gov. Ralph Herseth and father of former Congresswoman Stephanie Herseth Sandlin.
-Judith Meierhenry of Sioux Falls. Secretary of Labor, 1980-83. Secretary of Education and Cultural Affairs, 1983-85. Second Circuit Court Judge, 1988-2002. South Dakota Supreme Court Justice, 2002-2011. Appointed by Gov. Janklow, she was South Dakota's first female Supreme Court justice.
-Steven Zinter of Pierre. Sixth Circuit Judge, 1987-2002. South Dakota Supreme Court Justice, 2002-present. Justice Zinter was also appointed by Gov. Janklow.
The Capitol will be closed to the public at 5 p.m. on Monday and not reopen until 7 a.m. Tuesday. Circle Drive in front of the Capitol will close at 5 p.m. Monday and remain closed to the public until after 3 p.m. on Tuesday.
