SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – A Sioux Falls man died and three other people were injured in a two-vehicle crash near the intersection of Cliff Avenue North and 60th Street North in Sioux Falls on Thursday evening.
Jade Thie, 33, died when the 1999 Ford Windstar van he was driving was struck head-on by a 1997 Chevrolet Suburban. The Suburban, driven by Kyle Jones, 19, of Sioux Falls, was traveling northbound on cliff. The vehicle had been reported stolen and had been stopped by Sioux Falls Police officers a few minutes earlier. When officers approached the Suburban, the driver put the vehicle in gear and drove away.
That action initiated a pursuit by two Sioux Falls Police units. Jones fled north on Cliff Avenue. The pursuit was terminated shortly before the Suburban sideswiped an Isuzu Trooper and then collided with Thie’s Windstar van, which was in the turning lane on Cliff Avenue.
Thie was dead at the scene. Derik Guindon, 29, of Sioux Falls, a passenger in the Windstar van, suffered life-threatening injuries.
Jones suffered serious, non-life threatening injuries in the crash. Selma Jones, 20, of Sioux Falls, a passenger in the Suburban, suffered life-threatening injuries.
The injured parties were transported to Sioux Falls hospitals. No one in the Isuzu Trooper was injured.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. Sioux Falls Police Department, Minnehaha County Fire and Rescue and Minnehaha County Emergency Management assisted.
