Public Meeting to be held in Long Valley On S.D. Highway 73 Project

WINNER, S.D. - The public is invited to attend an informational meeting in Long Valley on Tuesday, April 3, at 6 p.m. MDT on reconstruction of South Dakota Highway 73.

The meeting will be at the Long Valley Community Building, located on the west side of Highway 73.

Grading work is scheduled to begin in early April on Highway 73 from the Bennett/Jackson County line north 16 miles to three miles north of the Highway 44/73 junction (Quiver Hill) in Jackson County.

The project involves milling off the old roadway surface and total reconstruction of the underlying dirt sub-base below. An interim surface will be placed on the newly graded dirt work, consisting of 12 inches of base material, followed by a prime and blotter seal coat.

A separate project will be let to contract in 2013 to construction the final surfacing on the highway.

Work will begin on the north end of the project (north of Quiver Hill) and proceed to the south towards Long Valley.

Highway 73 will be open to traffic at all times except when inclement weather makes the construction work zone impassable. In the event of a road closure, flaggers will be present to guide motorists to alternate routes.

The prime contractor is Loiseau Construction of Flandreau.

Construction will last through the summer and into the fall.

Travel through such a grading project can be very difficult at times. Travelers are reminded to drive slowly and carefully and to obey all signs and flaggers. Alternate state highway routes should be used whenever possible.  Overweight/overwidth loads should consider alternate routes.
