South Dakota State Student Groups Recognized

BROOKINGS, S.D. – Student organizations at South Dakota State University were recognized this week by the South Dakota Board of Regents for their academic excellence, community service, and organizational leadership.

  • SDSU Award for Academic Excellence Alpha Omega Epsilon (AOE), a social and professional women’s engineering sorority, consistently receives the highest grade point average in the SDSU Greek system. Members of AOE work to promote engineering in society, with endeavors including Engineers without Borders and the Girls in Engineering, Math, and Sciences (GEMS) program.  The chapter also contributes to the academic skills of their membership by providing tutoring sessions, study tables, and graduate school speakers.

  • SDSU Award for Community Service – The Dietetics and Health Sciences Club works to promote social and professional awareness in the fields of nutrition and health.  In the past year, the club has served the Feeding Brookings program, the Brookings Backpack program, the Empty Bowls event, the Brookings Food Pantry, and the Great American Bake Sale. In addition to serving in the community, the club also volunteers on campus by working football game concession stands, serving the Dean’s High Tea, and contributing to the College of Education and Human Sciences’ Habitat for Humanity fundraiser.

  • SDSU Award for Organizational Leadership – The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) is primarily comprised of manufacturing engineering technology and industrial management majors who are focused on career development.  SME has hosted plant tours and informational speakers for their membership and participated in campus programs such as Senior Day, the College of Engineering Phone-a-thon, and the Festival of Trees.  The group also served as parking lot attendants at football games and as the tear-down crew for SDSU’s Festival of Cultures.
