Injury Crashes on Aug. 10:

 

A motorcycle driven by Theodore Wozniak, age 72, from Deer Park NY, traveling south on S.D. Highway 87 in Custer State Park, attempted to make a slow speed turn when he lost control and fell over. Wozniak was not wearing a helmet and received serious non-life threatening injuries. He was transported to Custer Hospital and later transported to Rapid City Regional Hospital. Speed and alcohol were not factors.

                                                                                   

A motorcycle driven by Adam Benson, age 29, from Kearney, MO, traveling east on U.S. Highway 16 east of Hill City, was unable to stop in time when a vehicle in front of him quickly slowed to turn. Benson applied his brakes and skidded out of control. Benson was not wearing a helmet and received minor injuries. He was transported to Rapid City Regional Hospital. Speed and alcohol were not factors.                                                                          

 

 

 

A motorcycle driven by Donald Kurtti, age 51, from Blair NE, traveling west on Coolidge Lookout Road in Custer State Park, failed to negotiate a curve in the road and traveled 35 feet down an embankment. Blair was not wearing a helmet and received minor injuries. He was transported to Custer Hospital. Speed and alcohol were not factors.

                                                                                                                                               

A motorcycle driven by Michael Daley, age 56, from Pensacola FL, traveling west on Iron Mt. Rd, three miles from Keystone, failed to negotiate a curve in the road. The motorcycle left the road and struck a tree. He was not wearing a helmet and received minor injuries. He was transported to Rapid City Regional Hospital. Speed and alcohol were not factors.                                                                          

 

A motorcycle driven by Cherokee Thompson, age 53, from Breedsville MI, was traveling east on I-90, west of Sturgis, when he slowed in traffic. Motorcycles driven by Sean Ward, age 35, from Jackson NJ, and Sheri Jones, age 45, from Whiting NJ, also traveling east, struck the rear of Thompson’s motorcycle.  All three motorcycle riders were transported to Spearfish Regional Hospital with minor or serious non-life threatening injuries.                                                                                  

 

Noteworthy Items:

 

A vehicle driven by Sara Gianola, age, 24, of Morgantown WV, with passenger, Peter Smith, age 29, of Milwaukee, WI, was traveling on I-90, 12 miles east of Rapid City. The vehicle was stopped for speeding. The trooper noticed the odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. A search revealed 4 grams of Psilocybin Mushrooms, 0.3 ounces of marijuana, and numerous items of drug paraphernalia. Both subjects were place under arrest and charged accordingly.
