Saturday-Monday, Sept. 22-24, Custer State Park – The 47th annual Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup and Arts Festival will begin with music, art, crafts and fun for the entire family.
Entertainment, activities and the arts will be available Saturday and Sunday on the festival grounds just west of the State Game Lodge, beginning with a pancake feed at 8 a.m. MDT both days.
Entertainment by dancers, cowboy poets and western and Native American performers starts at 8:30 a.m. Visitors can explore arts and crafts booths from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The park’s famous Buffalo Chip Flip contest will be featured both days. A chili cook-off will be held on Sunday. The event culminates with the annual Buffalo Roundup near the Custer State Park buffalo corrals at 9:30 a.m. MDT on Monday, Sept. 24.
The corrals are located along Wildlife Loop Road. Parking areas open at 6:15 a.m. and close at 9 a.m. Spectators must decide prior to Monday morning which viewing/parking area from which they plan to watch the roundup. Visitors who want to watch from the North viewing area should travel down the Wildlife Loop Road from the State Game Lodge side. Those wishing to view from the South viewing area should travel down the Wildlife Loop Road from the Blue Bell Lodge side.
The roundup begins at 9:30 a.m. MDT on Monday, Sept. 24. For safety reasons, spectators are asked to remain in the viewing areas until all buffalo are corralled, around noon. The public may then take free shuttles into the corral area, where testing, branding and sorting of the buffalo will begin at 1 p.m.

Sunday, Sept. 23 – Tuesday, Sept. 25, Oacoma --The 2012 Indian Education Summit will be held Sept. 23-25 at Cedar Shore Resort at Oacoma. Opening ceremonies begin at 5 p.m. Sunday. The goal of the annual event is to provide solutions to the unique challenges American Indian students face, and to present successful models for educators to implement. The conference is an opportunity for collaboration among state leaders, tribal and Bureau of Indian Education schools, and individual school districts. In addition, the South Dakota Board of Education will meet Monday, Sept. 24, at 5 p.m. CDT in the Breakwater Room at Cedar Shore. Monday, Sept. 24, Watertown, 10 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. CDT, Civic Arena, 200 9th Ave. NE. – 12th annual Career Expo for high school students in northeastern South Dakota. The event will be held in conjunction with Post-High School Planning Day for juniors and seniors. Students will visit with local businesses about occupations in demand and the training needed to produce those business products or perform their services.
