South Dakota Non-Compliant Sex Offender Rate Remains Low

PIERRE, S.D. -   South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley announced today the compliance rate for registered sex offenders is 98.7 percent across the state.

Currently there are 3,027 sex offenders residing in South Dakota with just 40 identified instances of non-compliance. State law requires those convicted of sex crimes to register as sex offenders within three business days of coming into any county to reside. Additional state law requires sex offenders to re-register every six month.

“Keeping the public and children safe is the ultimate goal of the South Dakota’s jSex Offender Registry,” said Jackley. “This remarkably low non-compliant rate is the result of the attentive work of law enforcement, and these individuals should be commended.”

South Dakota’s Sex Offender Registry was the fourth in the nation to become certified. To be certified, the State must substantially implement the provision of the federal Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA). To date, South Dakota is one of only 16 states whose registries have met the national SORNA certification requirements.
