History Of Sioux Falls Neighborhoods Featured In New Dempster Photo Book
PIERRE, SD—Born and raised in Sioux Falls, author, photographer and former state Senator Tom Dempster knows the city well. His new book from the South Dakota State Historical Society Press, North of Twelfth Street: The Changing Face of Sioux Falls Neighborhoods, depicts that knowledge through Dempster’s beautiful photographs.
North of Twelfth Street focuses on three historic districts, as well as a collection of other north Sioux Falls sites that contain some of the city’s best-known and most-revered buildings, and which many people call home. Dempster frames these neighborhoods with the lens of his camera, providing a glimpse into this grand old city, its iconic edifices, and the people who live there.
Well-known landmarks such as Falls Park, Morrell’s and the State Theater are pictured alongside eateries, businesses, and their customers and owners. Each image is depicted with Dempster’s artistic eye for the best shot. Readers will reevaluate how they see Sioux Falls while learning about the history of the city and its people.
Dempster served as a Minnehaha County commissioner for nine years and in the South Dakota State Senate from 2001-2010 and continues to reside in Sioux Falls. His photography is found in museums and private collections throughout the region.
North of Twelfth Street can be purchased for $34.95 (plus shipping and tax where applicable) direct from the South Dakota State Historical Society Press by contacting (605) 773-6009, emailing orders@sdshspress.com, or visiting www.sdshspress.com . The book can also be purchased from most bookstores.
