What: One-vehicle fatal crash

Where: Interstate 90, mile 46, Piedmont, S.D.

Driver 1: Sandra Kay Birk, 57, Rapid City, S.D., fatal

Vehicle 1: 2002 Volkswagen Beetle

Piedmont, S.D. – A Rapid City woman died in a one vehicle crash at mile 46 on Interstate 90 in Piedmont, S.D. on Saturday, April 27.

Sandra Kay Birk, of Rapid City, was driving a 2002 Volkswagen Beetle westbound on Interstate 90. She merged into the passing lane and the driver’s side tires crossed the threshold line onto the left shoulder of the road. She over-corrected the steering and swerved, which caused the vehicle to enter the north ditch and then it vaulted over the service road and entered into a roll. She was not wearing a seat-belt and was ejected from the vehicle. Birk sustained fatal injuries.

No further information is immediately available.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating. Meade County Sherriff’s Office, South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks, Piedmont Volunteer Fire Department and the Rapid City Fire Department assisted.
