Injury Crashes:

 

A 2002 American Ranger motorcycle operated by Mark Steever, 47, from Lennox, SD, was traveling southbound on Nemo Road, eight miles northwest of Nemo. The motorcycle’s steering suddenly locked up while entering a curve. Steever applied his rear brake causing the motorcycle to fall on its side. Steever and his passenger, Jennifer Steever, 43, also from Lennox, were thrown from the motorcycle. Steever landed a short distance from the motorcycle and was uninjured. Jennifer Steever slid down a steep ditch slope and through an old barbed wired fence that was lying on the ground. Jennifer Steever was transported to Lead Deadwood Regional Hospital by Lead Deadwood EMS with minor injuries. Mark Steever was not transported and had no injuries. Neither wore helmets. No charges are pending. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office also assisted.

 

Ellen Lloyd, 60, from Lavista, NE, was traveling eastbound on Nemo Road, 10 miles southeast of Deadwood, negotiating a curve in the roadway when the motorcycle drifted off the road into the dirt. Lloyd lost control and overturned. Lloyd was transported to Lead Deadwood Regional Hospital by Lead Deadwood EMS with serious non-life threatening injuries. Lloyd was wearing a helmet. Speed and alcohol were not factors in this crash. No charges were filed. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department assisted at the scene.

 

A 2013 Kawasaki motorcycle driven by Sherwin Coleman, 58, from West Bountiful, UT, was traveling north on U.S. Highway 16A, one mile south of the Keystone Wye. The front tire on the motorcycle went flat causing the driver to lose control and crash. Coleman received serious non-life threatening injuries and was transported by Keystone Ambulance to Rapid City Regional Hospital. Coleman was not wearing a helmet. Keystone Volunteer Fire Department also assisted.

 

A 2011 Victory Cross Country motorcycle driven by Clarence Carlson, 40, from Warroad, MN, was traveling west on U.S. Highway 16A in Custer State Park. Carlson drifted off the road, lost control and was thrown from his motorcycle. His motorcycle continued on the road and struck a 2011 Harley Davidson motorcycle, traveling in the opposite direction, driven by Richard Stovall, 48, from Knoxville, TN. Stovall was not wearing a helmet and received serious non-life threatening injuries and was transported to Rapid City Regional Hospital by Keystone Ambulance. Carlson was wearing a helmet and received minor injuries. Speed and alcohol were not factors. A charge of lane driving is pending for Carlson.  Custer State Park Rangers also assisted at the scene.

 

A 2007 Harley Davidson motorcycle driven by William Perry, 45, from Hawthorne, CA, was traveling west on S.D. Highway 44 west of Rapid City near Falling Rock. Perry failed to negotiate a curve in the road and crashed. Perry received serious non-life threatening injuries and was transported to Rapid City Regional Hospital by Rapid City Ambulance. Speed, alcohol and no helmet were factors in this crash.

 

Darcy Sample, 57, of Alliance, NE, was northbound on S.D. Highway 79, 11 miles south of Hermosa. Sample was driving a 2002 Kawasaki motorcycle, when for an unknown reason, he lost control. The motorcycle went into the median and threw Sample off the motorcycle. A passerby took Sample to Rapid City Regional Hospital with serious non-life threatening injuries. Sample was not wearing a helmet and was charged with failure to report an accident.

 

Richard Keep, 41, and his passenger Nathalie Yaholkoski, 44, both of Winnipeg, Manitoba, were northbound on S.D. Highway 87, one mile east of Sylvan Lake. Keep was driving a 2005 Harley Davidson motorcycle when he entered a curve and leaned too far. The foot peg hit the ground causing Keep to lose control and tip the motorcycle over. Keep and his passenger were not wearing helmets and were taken to Custer Regional Hospital by ambulance with serious non-life threatening injuries. Speed is a possible factor but there are no charges pending. Assisting at the scene were the Custer State Park rangers and Custer County Volunteer Fire Department.

 

Roy Graham, 51, and his passenger Piermaria Medici, 48, both of Cedar Rapids, IA, were eastbound on the Wildlife Loop in Custer State Park. Graham failed to negotiate a curve on his 2011 Harley Davidson and went off the road, throwing both of them off the motorcycle. Neither Graham nor Medici wore a helmet. Graham had minor injuries and was not transported. Medici was taken to Custer Regional Hospital by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries. Custer County Emergency Manager and the Custer Volunteer Fire Department assisted at the scene. Speed and alcohol were not factors. Graham was charged with lane driving.

 

Denis Naidu, 35, of Vancouver, British Columbia, was northbound on S.D. Highway 87 in Custer State Park. Naidu was driving a 2002 Honda Shadow motorcycle when he attempted to slow down for traffic by applying only his front brake. The motorcycle tipped over. Naidu was not wearing a helmet and was taken to Custer Regional Hospital by ambulance with serious non-life threatening injuries. No charges are pending. Speed and alcohol were not factors in the crash. Assisting at the scene were Custer State Park Rangers and the Custer Volunteer Fire Department.

 

Corrine Tuma, 51, of Riverton, WY, was driving a 2002 Harley Davidson motorcycle northbound on Deadwood Avenue in Rapid City. Tuma was not wearing a helmet and failed to negotiate a curve and tipped over. Tuma suffered minor injuries and was not transported. Speed and alcohol are not factors and there are no charges pending. Assisting at the scene were Rapid City Fire and Rescue.

 

A 1994 Buick driven by Stanton Dodson, 78, from Moorcroft, WY, was traveling north on U.S. Highway 385 near Pactola Lake. Dodson began a left hand turn into a pull-off area. As he was crossing the oncoming lane, A 2004 Harley Davidson motorcycle driven by Thomas Taylor, 60, from Dimondale, MI, slammed on the brakes to avoid the Buick. The motorcycle slid onto its side, missed the Buick, and slid into oncoming traffic where it came to its final rest. The passenger, Candice Taylor, 57, also from Dimondale, came off the motorcycle and sustained minor injuries. She was transported to Rapid City Regional Hospital. Alcohol was not a factor. Dodson was cited for careless driving.

 

Other Noteworthy Items:

 

A Greeley, CO, man flagged down a trooper outside of Lead, and asked for a jump start because the battery on his vehicle was dead. The trooper observed several indicators of criminal activity while talking to the subject. A search of the subject produced glass pipes, one with marijuana and another with methamphetamine residue and a vial containing methamphetamine. The Colorado man was arrested and charged accordingly.  The vehicle was not seized.

 

A Westminster, CO, man was stopped in Spearfish for an equipment violation. The trooper observed several indicators of criminal activity. A Police Service Dog was deployed around the outside of the vehicle and alerted to illegal drugs in the vehicle. A search revealed a glass vial containing two grams of cocaine. The subject was arrest and charged accordingly.  The vehicle was seized and is pending forfeiture.

 

A Castle Rock, CO, woman was stopped outside of Sturgis for a moving violation.  The woman showed signs of recent drug use. Consent was given to search her purse.  A search revealed THC candies. A search of the vehicle revealed marijuana, paraphernalia, a small amount of cocaine and a small amount of hash. She was arrested and charged accordingly. The vehicle was seized and is pending forfeiture.

 

An Andover, MN, man was stopped in Spearfish for an equipment violation. Several indicators of criminal activity were observed. A Police Service Dog was deployed and indicated to the motorcycle.  A search revealed methamphetamine, marijuana and drug paraphernalia.  The driver and passenger admitted to recent drug use and were arrested and charged accordingly.  The motorcycle was seized and is pending forfeiture.
