   Travel Becoming Difficult on Many Black Hills Roads

PIERRE, S.D.  – Heavy snow and strong winds are making travel extremely difficult on many roads in the Black Hills area, Transportation and Public Safety officials say.

“Conditions are deteriorating rapidly on many of the highways in the Black Hills, and some roads likely will become impassable as this strong storm impacts the western part of South Dakota,’’ said Todd Seaman, Rapid City regional engineer for the Department of Transportation. “It isn’t going to be a good day to travel in this area, and we’d urge travelers to consider delaying travel if at all possible.’’

Earlier on Friday, officials closed Interstate 90 between Exit 30 and the Wyoming border. That segment of I-90 will remain closed until storm conditions improve and crews are able to clear the roadway.

Travelers are urged to visit safetravelusa.com/SD or to call 511 to check road conditions in other parts of South Dakota. The early-fall storm is impacting visibility and travel in other areas of western South Dakota, and officials caution travelers to watch the weather and be prepared to change travel plans.
