Monday, May 5, 2:45 p.m. – 3:15 p.m. CDT, Pierre – Gov. Dennis Daugaard will be planting the “Red Bud” tree at the Pierre Arbor Day Program in the Governor’s Grove in Hilgers Gulch in Pierre.

Saturday, May 3, 10 a.m. MDT – Interagency firefighters will collaborate to provide structure assessments for the Cabot Hill area located north of Rapid City. This event will take place Saturday May 3 from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. Local, state and federal firefighters will assess each structure to educate homeowners and collect information to develop plans in the event of a wildland fire. These strategies will then be distributed to fire departments to provide for safety of lives and property. For those not residing in the Laurel Heights development, an information kiosk will be available in the parking lot next to Kohl’s (737 Disk Drive, Rapid City, S.D. 57701) to provide free educational materials and the opportunity to sign up for a free property assessment. Sunday, May 4, 1 p.m. MDT – The public is invited to join local fire protection agencies for an afternoon of fun-filled events to be held at Rapid City’s Main Street Square on Sunday May 4 from 1 to 3 p.m. This event will feature informative displays and children's activities. Participants will be able to learn about wildfire risks and prevention methods. Main Street Square activities will include:

  • Match Stick Forest: This demonstration will show the importance of pre-fire mitigation for your property, including how slope, tree spacing and topography can affect fire behavior.
  • Firewise Building Materials/Landscaping Display:  Learn about the hazards of wildfire and how implementing Firewise practices (such as using fire resistant building materials) can reduce your risk of home destruction due to wildfires.
  • Air Tanker Flying: Fly our “tanker planes” which are used as a tool to fight wildfires and learn about how tankers are used in wildland firefighting.
  • Dress Up Like A Firefighter:  Gear up in our fire safety equipment at our dress up area. Then learn about our tools we use to fight fires.
  • Fire Truck Tours:  While touring our fire trucks, ask real wildland firefighters any questions you may have.
  • Smokey Bear Appearance: Come get your photo taken with Smokey Bear!
  • Poster Contest: See the poster contest winner’s great artwork.
  • Raffle: Sign up for your chance to win a free Smokey Bear lap quilt. A drawing for the quilt will be held at 2:30 pm. You do not need to be present to win.

 

Sunday, May 4, to Saturday, May 10 – Gov. Dennis Daugaard has proclaimed May 4-10 as Correctional Employees Week in South Dakota. The Department of Corrections is responsible for the supervision, custody and care of more than 3,600 adult inmates, more than 2,500 parolees and more than 600 juvenile offenders in placement and on aftercare.
