Truck Route Reconstruction to Begin in Pierre

PIERRE, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Transportation will begin reconstructing the north one-and-a-half miles of the Highway 14/83 truck route in Pierre on Monday, May 19.

Work on the project will include grading, storm sewer, curb & gutter, sidewalk, lighting, traffic signals, and asphalt concrete surfacing.  A raised concrete median will be constructed with turn lanes at access points along the project, and a new signalized intersection will be built at Brookstone Loop.

A permanent eastbound to northbound left turn lane will be constructed at the median crossover of the divided Highway 14/83 at Windsor Place. The median crossover between the truck route and Windsor Place, located at Kingsway Road and North Airport Road, will be temporarily closed to traffic during construction of the project.

There will also be work done at the Airport Road and truck route intersection to eliminate the two raised islands on the east side of the highway. The traffic signals at this intersection will be taken down during that portion of the project and stop signs set up on 4th Street and on Airport Road to control traffic.

Highway 14/83 truck route traffic will be directed to a gravel-surfaced on-site diversion that will be constructed adjacent to the east side of the project during the initial phases of the project.

A 14-foot width restriction will be in effect for the duration of the project, with a signed over-width detour provided around the Oahe Dam.  Access to businesses along the project will be maintained.

Temporary traffic signals will also be installed on portable trailers at the intersection of 4th Street and Euclid Avenue during the project.

Weekly public meetings will be held at the Pierre Mall, located at the top of the truck route, every Thursday morning at 10 a.m. throughout the duration of the project. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend these meetings.

The prime contractor on the $6.1 million project is Morris Inc. of Pierre.

The completion date is October 31.
