Fatal Crashes:

 

Paul Thomsen, 48, of Pender Neb., was riding a 2001 Yamaha Road Star XV 1600 south on Nemo Road near Pine Drive east of Nemo S.D. His motorcycle met a 2007 Honda Civic driven by Steven Scott Busse, 57, of Rapid City, S.D., traveling north on Nemo Road. The two vehicles side swiped each other on a curve and as a result, Thomsen lost control of his motorcycle and crashed. He sustained fatal injuries from the crash. Thomsen was not wearing a helmet. Busse was not injured in the crash. He was wearing a seatbelt.

 

Injury Crashes:

 

A 2001 Harley Davidson MC motorcycle driven by Jason Keelin, 39, of Huron, S.D., and a 2000 Harley Davidson motorcycle driven by Rodney Doering, 55, of Huron, slowed to make a left turn from S.D. Highway 79 mile marker 118 into the Dragpipe Saloon. A 2012 Chevrolet Silverado pickup, driven by Trey Wammen, 22, of Reva, S.D., rear-ended Keelin’s motorcycle, causing it to hit Doering’s motorcycle. Doering’s motorcycle went through a fence and hit a 1999 Ford F250, parked at the Dragpipe Saloon. Keelin was separated from his motorcycle. He was wearing a helmet and received minor injuries. He refused medical services on scene. Doering was not wearing a helmet and received serious non-life threatening injuries. He was Life-Flighted to Rapid City Regional Hospital. Wammen was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured. He was cited for careless driving. Alcohol was not a factor.

 

 A 2006 Harley Davidson Ultra motorcycle, driven by Nicholas Caro, 60, of Glenview, Ill., was traveling westbound on S.D. Highway 40 near mile marker 45. While negotiating a curve, Caro lost control of the motorcycle. He was separated from the motorcycle and received minor injuries. He refused medical attention. He was wearing eye protection, but no helmet. Speed and alcohol are not factors in this crash. No charges are pending.

 

A 2009 Harley Davidson motorcycle driven by Robert Porter, 64, of Casper, Wyo., was traveling northbound on Norris Peak Road. An uninvolved vehicle crossed the center lane which caused the motorcycle to swerve, run off the roadway and then into the ditch. Porter received serious non-life threatening injuries. He was transported by ambulance to Rapid City Regional Hospital. He was not wearing a helmet. No charges are pending.

 

A 2004 Harley Davidson FLHRCI motorcycle driven by Donnie Egan, 44, of Henderson, Colo., was northbound on Norris Peak Road about five miles north of Johnson Siding. He lost control while driving a curve and his motorcycle slid to its side. Egan received serious non-life threatening injuries. He was transported to Lead-Deadwood Regional Hospital by Lead-Deadwood Ambulance. Egan was not wearing a helmet. No charges are pending. 

 

A 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 pickup driven by Nicholas Eslick, 24, of Box Elder, S. D., was traveling southbound on Sturgis Road en route to the Tilford Gulch Campground. Eslick attempted a left turn in front of a 2007 Harley Davidson FLHX motorcycle driven northbound by Paul Meyer, 58, of Alda, Neb. Meyer received life-threatening injuries from the impact. He was Life-Flighted to Rapid City Regional Hospital.  Meyer was not wearing a helmet. Eslick was wearing a seatbelt, and was not injured. Eslick was cited for making an improper turn.

 

A 1999 Harley Davidson Sportster motorcycle driven by Thomas Glasgow, 53, of Billings, Mont., was stopped on US 14A in order to make a left hand turn onto Lost Gulch Road. Jasper King, 46, of Austin, Ark., was driving a 2010 Harley Davidson FHX motorcycle with passenger Elizabeth King, 48, also of Austin. He didn’t realize Glasgow’s motorcycle was stopped and King rear-ended Glasgow’s motorcycle. Neither driver received injuries. The passenger on King’s motorcycle received serious non-life threatening injuries. She was transported to Sturgis Hospital by Sturgis Ambulance. Neither drivers nor the passenger was wearing a helmet. No charges are pending.

 

Other Noteworthy Events:

 

A Calif. motorcycle was stopped for a moving violation. A police service dog was deployed for a sniff of the motorcycle and a search revealed .4 grams of meth and 1.4 grams of cocaine. The driver was charged accordingly. The motorcycle was seized pending forfeiture through the Attorney General’s Office.

 

A Calif. motorcycle was stopped for a moving violation. A police service dog indicated to the odor of illegal drugs. A search revealed drug paraphernalia and Mehtylin pills. The driver was charged accordingly. The motorcycle is pending forfeiture.

 

A Calif. Motorcycle was pulled over for moving violations. A police service dog was deployed around the motorcycle and indicated to illegal drugs. A search revealed 1.2 ounces of marijuana, drug paraphernalia, marijuana wax and hydrocodone pills. The driver was charged accordingly. The motorcycle is pending forfeiture proceedings.
