Fatal Crashes:

 

Gerald A. Ranous, 73, of Plymouth, was driving a 2005 Harley Davidson FLHTC 1 on S.D. Highway 87 near Pigtail Bridge. He failed to negotiate a turn, didn’t brake and then traveled ten feet up an embankment and rolled over once. Ranous was transported by air to a hospital in Rapid City where he died of injuries suffered in the crash. He was not wearing a helmet.

Macoy Michael Collins, 17, of Faith was driving a 1983 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck north on S.D. Highway 73, one mile south of Faith. The pickup drifted off of the roadway and entered the east ditch. Collins overcorrected to bring the vehicle back onto the roadway and crossed into the southbound lane. The vehicle swerved back toward the east ditch, became sideways and then rolled over which ejected Collins and a passenger named Kimberly Jolene Wright, 17, of Hermosa S.D. A third passenger, Blaze Harold McMurtry, 19 of Faith, was partially ejected. The vehicle rolled through a fence and came to rest on its top in a pasture. None of the vehicle’s occupants were wearing a seat belt. Collins suffered fatal injuries in the crash. Wright received serious but non-life threatening injuries in the crash. McMurtry received life threatening injuries in the crash.

Injury Crashes:

 

Larry H. Pack, 61, of Belle Fourche, S.D., was driving a 1993 Ford Ranger northbound on the Crook City Road approximately one mile south of Whitewood, S.D. Pack swerved left to miss a deer and the back end of his pickup broke loose from the road. He reacted and swerved back to the right which caused him to enter the west ditch and collide with a power pole. Pack exited his vehicle and called 911. He sustained serious, life threatening injuries in the crash and was transported to a hospital in Spearfish before being transported to a hospital in Rapid City. He was wearing a seatbelt.

Phillip D. Reddick, 65, of Longmont, Colo., was driving a 2003 Harley Davidson south on U.S. Highway 85 two miles south of Cheyenne Crossing. As he entered a curve, Reddick took the curve too tightly and entered onto the soft shoulder of the road. He lost control of the motorcycle and it skidded onto its side, which caused the driver to become separated from the motorcycle. Reddick suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries due to the crash. He avoided more serious injuries due to the full faced helmet he was wearing.

Kyla Marie Huntimer, 25, of Arlington, S.D., was driving a 2003 Pontiac Grand Am eastbound on U.S. Highway 14 between Volga, S.D. and Brookings, S.D. Previously, a motorcycle crash occurred in the westbound lanes of the highway and emergency personnel were on scene. Huntimer was looking at the motorcycle crash scene and she collided with another slower moving vehicle driven by Bradley Dean Ringgaard, 43, of Brookings, S.D. Neither driver was seriously injured in the crash and both were wearing seatbelts. The motorcycle crash was investigated by the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Jeffrey Arthur Krause, 52, of Fergus Falls, Minn., was driving a 1996 Harley Davidson Fat Boy eastbound on U.S. Highway 212 approximately 20 miles east of Newell, S.D. He encountered a large bump in the roadway which caused the suspension in the small trailer he was towing to fail. The trailer began to sway and caused Krause to lose control of the motorcycle. He entered into the north ditch and jumped from the motorcycle to avoid being rolled over. Krause sustained minor injuries and was transported to a hospital in Sturgis. He was wearing a helmet.

Lonnie L. Stutzman, 75, of Milford, Neb., was driving a 2007 Kawasaki Victory motorcycle east on Norman Ave., north of Black Hawk, S.D. He turned into a private driveway to make a U-turn and as he re-entered the roadway, he traveled off onto the south shoulder of the road. When Stutzman stopped and attempted to push the motorcycle back, he rolled forward into the south ditch and the motorcycle fell over onto his left ankle. He sustained minor injuries. Stutzman was not wearing a helmet.

Jaime Otero Santiago, 43, of Vego Alta, Puerto Rico, was driving a 2003 Yamaha Road Star, south on S.D. Highway 87 approximately one mile north of U.S. Highway 16A. He failed to negotiate a left curve and ran off of the road and into the west ditch. His right foot peg caught the soft ground and caused the motorcycle to roll onto its right side. He was transported to a hospital in Custer for serious but non-life threatening injuries. Santiago was wearing a helmet.

Steven Michael Miller, 41, of Amarillo, Tex., was driving a 2009 Kawasaki Vulcan Custom motorcycle on the Wild Life Loop in Custer State Park. He began to drift toward the ditch and attempted to bring the motorcycle back onto the roadway by over correcting. The motorcycle rolled onto its left side and Miller hit his head on the edge of the asphalt. He was not wearing a helmet. Miller was transported by ambulance to a hospital in Custer, S.D.

Cornelius McCarthy, 70, of Hinsdale, N.H., was driving a 2010 Harley Davidson FLHTK EL motorcycle eastbound on U.S. 16 near Rockerville, S.D. A single deer ran northbound out of the south ditch and into the rear of the motorcycle and right leg of passenger Catherine L. Clark, 61, of Hinsdale. McCarthy was able to keep the motorcycle upright and slowed to a stop on the shoulder.

Regina Sanetti, 55, of Bellingham, Mass., was driving a 2003 Harley Davidson motorcycle south 17 miles south of Deadwood on U.S. Highway 385. The area had received a large amount of ¼ to ½ inch diameter hail on the roadway and shoulder and caused slow and stand-still traffic and slippery road conditions. Sanetti lost control of the motorcycle as traffic began to move again and she entered the east ditch where she traveled off an embankment and came to a rest. She was separated from the motorcycle and landed on rocks located on the embankment. She was wearing a helmet and sustained serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Carlo Willard Castagneri, 75, of Richfield, Minn., mounted a 2013 Harley Davidson Trike at the campground he was staying at. He had purchased the motorcycle earlier in the day and stated that he thought it was idling at a higher level than normal. Castagneri’s passanger, Norma Marie Castagneri, 75, of Richfield, also mounted the motorcycle. Carlo Castagneri started the motorcycle and stated he thought it was idling fast. According to Castagneri, he let the clutch out slowly, but began to speed through the parking lot and crashed into two parked cars on the west side of the parking lot. He stated that he tried to hit the kill switch, but could not do so and control the motorcycle simultaneously. Both Castagneri’s sustained serious but non-life threatening injuries in the crash; neither was wearing a helmet.

 

 

Other Noteworthy Events:

 

A Wisconsin plated vehicle was stopped on Interstate 90, east of Rapid City for speeding. After the odor of raw marijuana was detected, a search was conducted. In the vehicle and on personal property, marijuana, marijuana paraphernalia and LSD were found. The vehicle’s occupants were transported to Pennington County Jail.

A Highway Patrol Trooper stopped to assist a motorist with a S.D. plated vehicle near Rapid City, S.D. The trooper noticed indicators that the female was under the influence of drugs. After an impaired driving field sobriety test was conducted and the female failed, a search of the vehicle produce methamphetamine located within personal property and methamphetamine paraphernalia including a scale and empty plastic baggies with white residue. The female was transported to Pennington County Jail.

A vehicle not bearing license plates was stopped near Edgemont, S.D. A raw marijuana odor from inside the vehicle was detected. The Trooper also detected that the driver had been drinking alcohol. During a search of the vehicle, hashish, marijuana and two marijuana pipes were found. A field sobriety test was conducted and the driver failed. In addition, an open container of alcohol was located in the vehicle. The driver and a passenger were taken to Fall River County Jail.

A California plated motorcycle was stopped on S.D. Highway 34 for speeding. The odor of raw marijuana was detected. During a search, marijuana, marijuana wax and marijuana paraphernalia were found. The driver was arrested.
