Canistota, Hayti, Rapid City and North Sioux City

To Host 125th Events

 

PIERRE, S.D. – Canistota, Hayti and Rapid City have formed statehood celebration committees to celebrate South Dakota’s 125th birthday.

 

On Oct.19, Canistota’s high school sophomores will host a bike ride and work on historic sites at 1:30 p.m. South Dakota’ first Governor, portrayed by John Timm, will be speaking at the high school at 3 p.m. An auction and bake sale at 4 p.m. will be followed by a meal and birthday cake at 5 p.m. Money raised will be used to pay for park improvements, including a climbing wall, special needs swing, performance stage and labyrinth.

 

In Hayti, on Oct. 26, events will include an old-fashioned church service with the men sitting apart from the women and children, special booths of product samplers at the Hayti Fire Hall and an open Hayti Museum.

 

On a date in October yet to be determined, North Sioux City will have the grand opening of the town’s new library. The 1989 Centennial Time Capsule will also be opened and the items in it will be put on display.

 

The Rapid City Statehood Committee will be promoting 13 special events in October and November. On Oct. 3, a special “Wind and Water” exhibit will feature more than 30 local artists displaying original works from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Prairie Edge. Artists will visit with the public and there will also be a dance performance.

 

On Oct. 11, a “Taste of South Dakota” event will feature culture-rich food from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Main Street Square.

 

Local musicians will perform historic songs at 2 p.m. at the Rapid City Downtown Public Library on Oct. 5, 12, 19 and 26. 

 

On Nov. 8, at 2 p.m., there will be a special dedication of the Legacy Commons with the planting of a Black Hills Spruce Tree and the burying of a time capsule. A special speaker will also depict the life of Valentine McGillycuddy. There will also be tours of the “Pap” Madison Cabin and the Journey Museum with refreshments provided.

 

A special series of South Dakota made films will be shown at 7 p.m. at the Rapid City Downtown Public Library on Nov. 7, 14, 21 and 28.

 

The Downtown Public Library will also feature Native American speakers discussing statehood from a Lakota point of view at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 13 and sustainable lifestyles at 7 p.m. on Nov. 19.
