Technical Issue Affecting Vehicle Registration System in Some Counties Fixed

PIERRE, S.D., -- Friday morning a technical issue surfaced, preventing some counties across the state from accessing a system that allows South Dakota drivers to renew their vehicle registration.

Several counties, Division of Motor Vehicle self-service terminals and an online customer portal were functioning properly.

“A software setting was altered, which created a technical barrier between some counties and the state’s system,” Jim Edman, Deputy Commissioner for the Bureau of Information and Telecommunication (BIT) said. “The solution involved restoring the necessary SDCars browser settings for users. We gathered all available staff to resolve the problem as quickly as possible in order to get the system running for county office use.”

Peggy Laurenz, Director of the Division of Motor Vehicles said, “We understand the problems counties faced today with not being able to provide their usual high level of customer service, due to SDCars being down.”

Andy Gerlach, Secretary, of the South Dakota Department of Revenue said, “This technical issue did not affect, nor was it related to, any of the Highway Funding Bill updates that are still on schedule to be implemented April 1.”
