Sunday/Monday Fatal Crashes:

 

At 11 a.m., I-90, mm 179, 13 miles west of Murdo, a 2013 GMC Sierra, driven by Randall Miller, 55, Mount Vernon, SD, was traveling west through the construction zone and crashed into a motorcycle ahead of him. The motorcycle collided with a 2000 Ford Expedition ahead of him. The motorcycle driver, Rhonda Denato, 49, Ottuma, IA., was thrown from the vehicle and later died from her injuries. She was not wearing a helmet. Miller was arrested for DUI and reckless driving.

At 2:18 p.m., I-90, mm 71, a 1959 Chevrolet Corvette driven by Archie Smith, 73, Kansas City, KS crashed into a cable guard rail in the median. Smith died as a result of his injuries. Passenger, Leanne Moore, 42, Kansas City, KS, sustained serious non-life threatening injuries. Alcohol and speed were not factors. Both westbound lanes were closed for a time.

At 4:35 p.m., SD Highway 44, mm 120 at Interior, Wade Livermont, 45, Allen, SD, was driving a Ford F350 pickup pulling a horse trailer west on SD Highway 44. As Livermont began to slow down to make a left turn into the rodeo grounds, a westbound Harley Davidson motorcycle began to pass the pickup and struck the vehicle. The driver of the motorcycle, Brian Ware, 51, Seattle, WA, died as a result of his injuries. He was wearing a helmet. The passenger on the motorcycle, Laura Ware, 56, Seattle, WA, received serious non-life threatening injuries. Speed was not a factor. All occupants in the pickup were wearing seatbelts and were not injured.

At 1:46 a.m. Monday, at intersection of Sherman Avenue and Middle Street in Sturgis, Todd Hay, 47, Deland, FL, was riding a motorcycle south on Middle Street in Sturgis. The motorcycle crossed Sherman Street and left the road. The vehicle struck a wooden fence pole in a residential yard. Hay died as a result of his injuries. The yard of the residence was occupied by several tents, but individuals sleeping in the tents were not injured.

 

 

Injury Crashes:

 

At 10:23 a.m., at intersection of U.S.385 and U.S. 16, three miles east of Hill City, Timothy Perkins, 34, Elkhart, KS, was driving a motorcycle westbound on U.S. 16. A second motorcycle, driven by Jeffrey Marshall, 49, Uniontown, OH, was southbound on U.S. 385. The Perkins motorcycle turned northbound on US 385, jumped the curb and crashed into the Marshall motorcycle. Perkins was arrested for DUI, Reckless Driving and Vehicular Battery. Marshall suffered serious non-life threatening injuries. Neither driver was wearing a helmet.

At 11:19 a.m., at intersection of U.S. 212 and U.S. 85 in Belle Fourche, David Cotriss, 70, lost control of his motorcycle after traveling over some fluid on the roadway. The driver suffered minor injuries. He was wearing a helmet. Speed and alcohol were not factors.

At 11:39 a.m., I-90, mm 45, near Piedmont, David Ross, 43, Greenville, OH was traveling east on I-90. Othel Wagner, 21, Covington, OH, was driving a second motorcycle east on I-90. Both were in the driving lane and the motorcycles collided. Both drivers became separated from their motorcycles and both suffered minor injuries. Both were wearing helmets.

At 11:44 a.m., at the intersection of Sherman Street and Middle Street in Sturgis, a trooper tried to make a traffic stop on a motorcycle. The driver, Philip Adrian, 57, Indianapolis, IN refused to stop. He traveled for nine blocks before losing control of the motorcycle. Adrian sustained minor injuries. He was treated at the Sturgis Hospital and then taken into custody. Adrian was arrested for aggravated eluding, driving under suspension, expired license plates and two charges of failing to stop for a stop sign.

At 2:14 p.m., U.S. 16 A, mm 55 (Iron Mountain Road), Eric Hoza, 38, Fort Collins, COL was traveling south on US 16 when he lost control of his motorcycle while making a turn. The driver and passenger were ejected. Hoza and the passenger, Brooke Boddicker, 33, Fort Collins, CO, sustained minor injuries. Hoza was arrested for DUI and careless driving. Both the driver and passenger were wearing their helmets.
