Highway Patrol Trooper Injured During Traffic Stop
PIERRE, S.D. – A South Dakota Highway Patrol trooper was injured during a traffic stop near Rapid City on Saturday.
The trooper initiated the traffic stop at mile marker 70 on Interstate 90 at approximately 11:03 a.m. MDT. During the course of the traffic stop, the trooper was assaulted.
The vehicle was occupied by four suspects, and it then fled the scene. Pennington County deputies apprehended the subjects near Wall, S.D.
The trooper sustained serious non-life threatening injuries and is being treated for those injuries. His name is not being released at this time.
“Right now our priority is our trooper and his family,” Highway Patrol Superintendent Col. Craig Price says. “We’re very thankful he is alive, and we’re going to do everything we can to assist him as he recovers.”
The Pennington County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation.
