Director of Juvenile Services Doug Herrmann Retires
PIERRE, S.D. – Doug Herrmann, director of Juvenile Services for the Department of Corrections, retired from state government March 8 after 30 years of service.
Herrmann has overseen the state’s juvenile corrections system since 2001. He began his corrections career in October of 1985 as a counselor at the Youth Forestry Camp in Custer State Park. He previously served as superintendent of the state’s juvenile corrections programs at Custer and as the executive director of the Attention Center for Youth in Lincoln, Nebraska.
“Doug and the juvenile division staff have utilized evidence-based practices over the past decade to reduce the juvenile offender population and lower the recidivism rate while marking the highest level of service in the nation in our juvenile facilities,” said Corrections Secretary Denny Kaemingk. “I cannot think of anyone past or present that has had a greater positive impact on the youth of the State of South Dakota than Doug.”
Herrmann was honored in 2006 with the Satnan-Canary Award, the most prestigious award presented by the South Dakota Corrections Association. In 2005, he was named Outstanding Administrator by the Council of Juvenile Correctional Administrators.
Kristi Bunkers will assume Herrmann’s duties. She previously served as director of Juvenile Community Services.
Herrmann has accepted the executive director position with the Rapid City Club for Boys and their Foundation.
“The Rapid City Club for Boys is a wonderful organization, and I am grateful for the opportunity to continue working with boys and their families,” Herrmann said.
