State Treasurer to return to the Brown County Fair

What:         The State Treasurer’s Unclaimed Property Division will set up a booth at Brown County Fair to return unclaimed property to the rightful owners.

Where:       Brown County Fairgrounds, Aberdeen, SD

When:        Tuesday, August 16, 2016, 5 p.m.-9 p.m.

                   Wednesday, August 17, 2016, 10 a.m.-9 p.m.

                   Thursday, August 18, 2016, 10 a.m.-9 p.m.

                   Friday, August 19, 2016, 10 a.m.-9 p.m.

                   Saturday, August 20, 2016, 10 a.m.-9 p.m.

                   Sunday, August 21, 2016, 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m.

Why:          The State Treasurer’s Unclaimed Property Division will attend Brown County Fair in Aberdeen this week to return unclaimed funds to South Dakotans. 

Unclaimed property refers to accounts, in financial institutions, businesses and government agencies that have had no activity for three years or longer.

Currently, the Unclaimed Property Division is holding over $344 million in unclaimed funds. This year alone we have already given back $19.2 million. The state holds the money in a custodial capacity until the money can be returned to the rightful owners.

“Our goal is to put money back into the hands of South Dakotans,” Treasurer Rich Sattgast said. “That money ultimately makes its way into our economy which is good for our state.”
