Monday, April 24, 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. CDT, Pierre – Gov. Dennis Daugaard will speak at the Associated School Board’s Academic Excellence Recognition Luncheon at the Ramkota in Pierre.
Wednesday, April 26, 1 – 2 p.m. CDT, Brookings – Gov. Dennis Daugaard will recognize ROTC cadets for their achievements at the Governor’s Day ceremony in Brookings.
Friday, April 28, 10:30 a.m. CDT, Freeman – Gov. Dennis Daugaard is speaking at the grand opening ceremony for the Ace Hardware store, 609 S. Hwy 8 in Freeman.
Tuesday, April 25, Pierre – First Lady Linda Daugaard and South Dakota Emergency Management Office mascot, Tommy the Turtle, will discuss severe weather safety with Pierre second graders. The First Lady will read the Tommy the Turtle’s book “Tornado Alert: Don’t Get Hurt” to the students. The book’s author, Ken Alvine, also will be there to show students how to sketch cartoon characters. The schedule is Jefferson Elementary School at 8:30 a.m., Kennedy Elementary School at 10 a.m. and Buchanan Elementary School at 1 p.m. The school visits are in observance of Severe Weather Awareness Week which is being held next week in South Dakota.
Saturday, April 22, 9 a.m. CDT, Pierre, Capitol Lake Visitor Center – The SD Department of Agriculture is holding a conservation-oriented speech contest for students in grades 9 – 12. East River and Rushmore Electric Power Cooperatives and South Dakota Rural Electric Association present the winners with scholarships to be used at any college, university or accredited vocational technical school within South Dakota.

Tuesday, April 18, to Thursday, April 20 – Bring Your ‘A’ Game to Work encompasses seven different skills including Appreciation, Attitude, Attendance, Appearance, Ambition, Accountability and Acceptance. These soft skills and a willingness to take direction are generally more desired by employers than the specific skills a particular job requires. This is an eight-hour course offered in a one-day setting or in two four-hour settings. This workshop will be offered at the following locations:

The cost is $175/per participant, $265 per for limited English speaking participants, or $480 for non-English speaking participants with an interpreter. The free “Spring Smoke School” field certification is open to those from industry, municipalities, consultants or anyone who would like to be certified to evaluate visible emissions (smoke/dust). Wednesday, April 26, to Thursday, April 27, 8 a.m. CDT, Pierre – DENR and the Environmental Response Training Program (ERTP) will host two days of “Sampling for Hazardous Materials” training in the Floyd L. Matthew Environmental Education and Training Center in the Joe Foss Building, 523 E. Capitol Ave. The training course will include field exercises for sampling drums, monitoring wells, soil and surface water/sediment. The training will also include sampling plan development, field screening and sample collection techniques to ensure collection of defensible, representative samples. The class size is limited to 30 people and will include participants from state and federal agencies, tribes and local governments.
