RAPID CITY, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Transportation says construction will start for a High Friction Surface Treatment (HFST) on the westbound Interstate 90 Exit 57 off ramp to southbound Interstate 190, on Sunday Aug. 25, 2019.

The westbound Exit 57 off ramp will be closed starting at 8 p.m. Sunday night and re-opened at 5 a.m. Monday morning to complete grinding of the concrete surface. There will be two additional night closures needed to complete the HFST.

Work on the ramp includes grinding the concrete, sealing the joints between concrete slabs, and then applying the HFST.

The High Friction Surface Treatment is used on specific stretches of highways to improve safety by applying a skid resistant surface. According to the Federal Highway Administration, HFST’s are proven to dramatically and immediately reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities associated with friction issues.

Louis-Company, Inc., of Lees Summit, Missouri is the prime contractor on this $940,000 project.

This project has an overall completion date of Sept. 27, 2019
