Second Person Dies in June 18 Potter County Fatal Crash

 

What:    Two-Vehicle Fatal Crash

Where:  U.S. Highway 212, mile marker 209

              16 miles west of Gettysburg, S.D.

When:   10:27 p.m., Thursday, June 18, 2020

 

Driver No. 1:  Mariah LeBeau, 24, Aberdeen, S.D., Fatal Injuries

Passenger: Joseph Skye, 35, Rapid City, S.D., Fatal Injuries

Vehicle: 2003 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

 

Driver No. 2: Calen Decker, 19, Gettysburg, S.D., No Injuries

Vehicle: 2013 Ford F350 Pickup

 

GETTYSURG, S.D. – A second person has died as a result of injuries sustained in a two-vehicle crash that happened June 18 west of Gettysburg.

 

A 2003 Chevrolet Monte Carlo was westbound on U.S. Highway 212 when the driver lost control as the vehicle entered a right-turning curve. The vehicle cross the centerline and collided with an eastbound 2013 Ford F350 pickup.

 

Joseph Skye, the 35-year-old passenger in the Monte Carlo, was pronounced dead at the scene. The female driver, 24-year-old Mariah LeBeau of Aberdeen, S.D., sustained life-threatening injuries. She was eventually airlifted to a Sioux Falls hospital where she died Saturday, June 27. Neither occupant was wearing a seat belt.

 

Calen Decker of Gettysburg was the 19-year-old male driver of the pickup. He was wearing a seat belt.

 

Charges are pending against both drivers.

South Dakota’s Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash. All information is only preliminary at this point.

 

The Highway Patrol is part of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
