Prescribed Fire at the Outdoor Campus - West
Rapid City — The South Dakota Department of Agriculture’s Wildland Fire Division and South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks plan to ignite the Adventure Trail prescribed fire located at the Outdoor Campus - West on Thursday, January 7, 2021.
Firefighters plan on burning approximately three acres. The Adventure Trail prescribed fire is designed to reduce the potential threat of wildfire by reducing the fuel load of overgrown grasses. This prescribed fire will also compliment the fuels reduction work completed in the surrounding areas. Reducing the fuels in the project area will promote growth and the return of natural grasses and forbs, return nutrients to the soil, and rejuvenate native habitat for wildlife.
Smoke may be visible in the surrounding areas and can linger after ignition has been completed. Fire crews will secure, patrol and monitor fire lines as appropriate for public and firefighter safety. For more information on smoke management visit: http://gpfireinfo.blogspot.com/p/smoke-management.html.
Prescribed fire activities are being coordinated with the city of Rapid City.
