Names Released In Custer County Fatal Crash

What:    Two-Vehicle Crash

Where:  South Dakota Highway 79, mile marker 60

              Within the city of Hermosa, S.D.

When:   8:30 a.m., Friday, Aug. 26, 2022

Driver No. 1: Dannie Barcal, 80, Chadron, NE, Fatal Injuries

Vehicle: 2016 Dodge Journey

Driver No. 2: Nathaniel Sichling, 29, Florence, AZ, No Injuries

Vehicle; 2016 Peterbilt Semi-truck and trailer 

HERMOSA, S.D. –  A Chadron, NE man has been identified as the person who died Friday morning in a two-vehicle crash within the city of Hermosa.

Preliminary crash information indicates that a 2016 Dodge Journey was northbound on South Dakota Highway 79 when the driver attempted to turn into a parking lot. The Dodge turned into the path of a southbound 2016 Peterbilt semi-truck and trailer.

Dannie Barcal, the 80-year-old driver of the Dodge, was transported by ambulance to a Rapid City hospital where he later died. Nathaniel Sichling, the 29-year-old semi-truck driver from Florence, AZ, was not injured. Both drivers were wearing seatbelts.

South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. All information released so far is only preliminary.

The Highway Patrol is an agency of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
