Names Released in Brookings County Fatal Crash
What: Two-vehicle crash
Where: 486th Ave./204th St., eight miles east of White, S.D.
When: 9:05 p.m., Sunday, May 21, 2023
Driver No. 1: Blake Edwin Olsen, 29, Pipestone, Minn., fatal injuries
Vehicle No. 1: 2009 Harley Davidson FLSTF motorcycle
Driver No. 2: Taylor James Shellum, 32, Trent, S.D., minor injuries
Vehicle No. 2: 2001 Harley Davison FXDWGDOM motorcycle
White, S.D.: A Pipestone, Minn., man has been identified as the person who died Sunday evening in a two-vehicle crash east of White, S.D.
Preliminary crash information indicates that a 2001 Harley Davidson motorcycle and a 2009 Harley Davidson motorcycle were traveling south on 486th avenue. The lead motorcycle lost control going around a curve. The second motorcycle rear-ended the lead motorcycle. Both motorcycles came to rest in the west ditch.
Blake Edwin Olsen, 29, of Pipestone was the driver of the second motorcycle. He was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
The 32-year-old male driver of the lead motorcycle, Taylor James Shellum of Trent, S.D., was transported to a hospital with minor injuries.
Neither driver was wearing a helmet, and alcohol use is under investigation.
South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. All information released so far is only preliminary.
The Highway Patrol is an agency of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
