Names Released in Jackson County Fatal Crash

 

What:    Two-vehicle crash

Where:  I 90, mile marker 134, 18 miles west of Kadoka, S.D.

When:   9:39 p.m., Saturday, July 22, 2023

 

Driver No. 1: Isaac Thompson, 24, Stevens Point, WI., serious non-life-threatening injuries

Vehicle No. 1: 2016 Chrysler Town and Country

Passenger No. 1: Mahra Wick, 22, Gile, WI., serious non-life-threatening injuries

 

Driver No. 2: Samuel Vining, 31, Sioux Falls, S.D., fatal injuries

Vehicle No. 2: 2020 Hyundai Elantra

 

JACKSON COUNTY, S.D.- A Sioux Falls, S.D., man has been identified as the person who died Saturday evening in a two-vehicle crash 18 miles west of Kadoka, S.D.

 

Preliminary crash information indicates a 2020 Hyundai Elantra was driving the wrong direction, west in the eastbound lane of 1-90.

At about 9:39 p.m. the Hyundai crashed head on with a 2016 Chrysler Town and Country that was driving east in the eastbound lane of I-90 near mile marker 134.

 

The driver of the Chrysler Town and Country, Isaac Thompson, age 24, sustained serious non-life-threatening injuries and was taken by ambulance to the Philip Hospital.

He was wearing a seatbelt.

 

The passenger in the Chrysler, Mahra Wick, age 22, sustained serious non-life-threatening injuries and was taken by ambulance to a Rapid City hospital.

She was wearing a seatbelt.

 

The driver of the Hyundai, Samuel Vining, age 31, sustained fatal injuries.

He was wearing a seatbelt.

 

I 90 was closed at mile maker 131 and traffic was detoured for about two hours until I 90 reopened.

 

South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. All information released so far is only preliminary.

 

The Highway Patrol is an agency of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
